When Should You Renew Your DSC?

The industry standard recommendation — and the one Akham follows — is to initiate renewal at least 30 days before your expiry date. For businesses with critical filing deadlines (MCA annual return, ITR, GST, e-tenders), we recommend a 60-day buffer.

Here is why the timing matters:

• Processing takes 1–3 business days for most renewals (individual certificates can be same-day).
• If you're filing a time-sensitive document (annual ROC return, income tax deadline), an expired DSC means an automatic late filing with potential penalties.
• Courier delivery of the new token to cities outside Mumbai takes 2–3 days — factor this into your timeline.
• If your existing token is damaged or lost, you need to factor in additional time for a new token.

Renewal vs Fresh Issue: What's the Difference?

Technically speaking, DSC "renewal" in India is actually a fresh certificate issuance. The IT Act does not support certificate extension — a new certificate with a new validity period is generated and installed onto your existing USB token (or a new one if needed).

A useful option: if you originally got a 1-year certificate, you can renew for 2 years to reduce the frequency of renewals going forward. The 2-year certificate costs slightly more upfront but saves you the renewal process and fees next year.

How to Check Your DSC Expiry Date

There are two easy ways to find your DSC expiry date:

Method 1: Via the Token Software

1. Plug your USB token into your computer.
2. Open the eToken Properties software (installed with your token drivers).
3. Look under "Certificate Details" — the "Valid To" field shows your expiry date.

Method 2: Via a Government Portal

1. Log in to incometax.gov.in or mca.gov.in.
2. Navigate to your profile or DSC registration section.
3. The registered certificate's validity is displayed there.

What Happens If Your DSC Expires?

If your DSC expires before renewal, the consequences are immediate and cascading:

• Portal access blocked: MCA21, Income Tax, DGFT, and other portals will reject your signature immediately. You cannot submit any DSC-dependent filing.
• E-tender bids rejected: Any bid submitted after your certificate expires will be flagged as invalid and rejected outright — even if the bid is submitted on time.
• Late filing penalties: If your MCA annual return or ITR was due while your DSC was expired, the late fee accumulates per day until you can file with a new certificate.
• GST complications: If your GST DSC is expired, you may not be able to file returns or make amendments — leading to interest and penalties.

An expired DSC does not invalidate documents you previously signed with it. Signatures made while the certificate was valid remain legally valid. Only new signing is blocked.
